GEMSTONES ARE ANCIENT, MYSTICAL AND MAGICAL...
The trade of gemstones is as ancient as mankind itself, we have traded gemstones through global routes for centuries, since time immemorial e all loved a sparkly stone.
Gemstones are precious and beautiful it would be hard not to love them! We all love the beauty and mystical metaphysics of gemstones to this day, their mesmerising appeal is within our DNA to love them.
It is said that Gemstones were the first structure to form on Earth, the earth, Gaia ‘gave birth to them’ in the darkness of her womb, before plants, animals and huemans, I like to think of crystals as the 'first-born' of Planet Earth, 'she' our Mother planet created such beauty for us to use, eath gemstone a unique colour and vibration,
We can tap into this raw 'seed' energy of light and vibration on a daily basis, though as there is a huge rise in the interest in gemstones, it is important we look and turn to the ethics and sustainability and how we acquire our crystals.
The gemstone market is awash and flooded with 'fakes' you may think you are buying. a'cheap crystal' but at what cost is this coming with? it is more important than ever to be aware of where and how your gemstones are acquired, not only because of cheap fakes
Some questions I have meditated upon in todays unprecedented demand for crystals:
QUESTION 1:
DOES CRYSTAL MINING PILAGE THE EARTH?
For those who feel excessively guilty that the Earth is being 'ravaged' by the mining of gemstones I would like to put some things straight.
Firstly, the Earth’s ocean covers 70.9% of the earth’s surface, and the gemstones that are mined are from the remaining 29.1% of land mass, which leaves an amazing two thirds of the earths surface that remain UNTOUCHED and full of gemstones underneath!
What is mined is still present, it is mined to sit on the surface of our beloved planet, being held by 'Crystal Keepers' who can channel and connect to their crystals and gemstones' ancient wisdom. Children and adults alike can look at, collect and behold the wonders of Mother Earth and get excited falling in love with the crystal kingdom and its science 'Geology' in whatever way it touches their soul.
However we still should be aware of the origin of where crystals are from and their journey to us, hoping that it is a good conscious one, and that the mining processes are as clean and ethical as possible. It is essential you start to ask these questions to your suppliers if you can. They may not know of every mine that each crystal came from in detail, but the supplier may be able to work with companies that actively source crystals from more responsible mining practices so we an enjoy them in a greater depth
QUESTION 2
HOW CAN WE CARE ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT WHEN WE PURCHASE CRYSTALS?
It is essential we support traders who specialise trading from the companies involved in Crystal Mining with an ethical stance
this means looking for:
Hand collected specimens from both within the UK and Globally, including gemstones collected from the surface (and from caves),
Look for locally sourced gemstones that are natural in form, ideally raw in their state. They should usually have the origin of the gemstone on them and sometimes the actual mine. Some crystals do not come with these details but may still be 'ethically sourced' which means that they may not use child labour and care for certain conditions of the workers who mine or process them
remember there is no such thing as a 'cheap crystal' usually the very cheap gemstones are either fakes, dyed, baked, altered or definitely NOT ethical
Most ethical Crystals are mined from small hand dug pits others from larger quarries, we have to put this into a wider context and be aware that gemstone mines are still tiny compared with the massive quarries created by digging for building materials and other industrial uses. We all use these industrial minerals in our every day lives and this has a huge impact on the environment compared to the mining of crystals, such as aggregate, minerals and metals for commerce, used in nearly everything from building materials to beauty products. There are other considerations, such as most of my wholesalers ship by sea to lessen the impact of air travel. Also we can take further action such as WiseRoots Etsy aim to offset carbon footprints by donating to treesisters to plant trees and average donating to plant at least 15 trees a month through community projects globally to offset further destruction of Planet Earth

QUESTION 3
HOW CAN WE ADOPT FAIR TRADE AND ETHICS WHEN WE PURCHASE CRYSTALS?
It is always wise to look for a company that deals with wholesalers who offer ethical fair traded gemstones. Gemstones at WiseRoots Etsy and at my traders are not registered as a Fair Trade Product as it is exceedingly hard to follow the process of a crystal directly back to a 'mine of origin', though trying to source gemstones from companies where they are created, treated and mined under ‘as ethical conditions as possible’ means asking questions such as
The workers work in a safe environment and receive a fair wage.
Crystals sourced from India are in general more difficult to give fair trade status as the work customs and culture of India is unique and has to be respected, gemstones are often polished and worked on by communities, families and outworkers in the home environment. It is tradition for families, generally fathers who pass on their skill to school age children in an informal family environment before they go on to practice the skill on leaving school. With this in mind, it is difficult to say with 100% certainty that no young person has ever touched a crystal, however I am assured that it is certainly not common practice. It is then for us to accept the customs of a culture which is different to ours whilst maintaining trust by dealing with small companies that can give assurance that no one works against their will.
i hope this has been interesting and enlightening journey into the world of gemstones.
SUMMARY
It is great to ask as many questions as possible when acquiring gemstones as some have a purer journey than others, the market for ethically sourced gemstones is a new and growing market, as people are turning away from buying items that have a 'blood print' on their energy. As sellers or wholesalers we can only do our bit and every question brings us a tiny step closer to more awareness. I am absolutely passionate about gemstones, some may say Im. a'Rock Nerd', and when I hold in my hands a single origin gemstone I do get quite excited! the energy of a purer mined gemstone feels different, and looks different, they may not be as 'samey' to look at as crystals from huge mines, they have depth ad character, they may be different colours than the usual as they will not be dyed, baked or altered in any way, nonetheless they are spectacular. I hope I have given you the inspiration to go forward and find some wonderful consciously mined gemstones.
