Suggested Instructions
please read notes fully before you proceed with playing your rattle. When using the word ‘shaman/shamanic’ it is being used descriptively and not referring to its origin of Mongolian shamanic practice.
CULTURAL STYLE
I’ve written this guide to bring a deeper connection to you and rattle work, this guide includes techniques from my Shamanic Core Training spanning over 30 years. I originally trained in Native American Shamanic Practice, then trained in Peruvian Shamanism, i prefer to keep my style Animistic and Core rather than linked to a specific indigenous cultural tribal practice from a specific lineage. thank you Cara
THE SACRED RATTLE
The rattle has been used since the dawn of time and is one of the most ancient sound healing instruments, used by Tribes, Shamans, medicine men and women for journeying, healing and ceremony work on every continent on earth. The shakers and rattles were made from anything that made a noise when shaken, including seed pods, husks, wood, grasses, shells rocks and bones, shaped animal skin, twine and sinew.
The sound of a rattle was said to be ‘the sound of creation’ by some Indigenous Tribes people. Every tribe and indigenous culture has different rattles and ways of playing as well as cultural and spiritual reference as to their usage. There is a lineage of Rattle Healing on every continent of the Earth. An example: in South America the rattle is believed to embody the sacred forces of the cosmos through its sounds, structural features, contents, and connection to shamanic trance. Anyone can use a rattle easily for personal healing, all you need to do is pick up and play!
RATTLES CAN BE USED FOR
SPACE CLEARING and Feng shui creating and cleansing of environments and spaces
HEALING for yourself and others. Rattle energy disperses & breaks up negativity with the subtle energy bodies, aura and chakras
CEREMONY Rattles make a great took for all Ceremony and Altar work
SACRED CIRCLE WORK you can create sacred space by opening your circle while shaking your rattle to create sacred space
JOURNEYING The shaman's rattle can be used alone or with your drum and can be used on journeys to invoke the assistance of power animals and helping spirits and sound journeys
AS A WAND It is possible to direct energy with rattles, much like with a magic wand, stick/rod shaped rattles work especially well as wands
AS A SWEEPING TOOL you can use your rattle as an energy detector in energy healing work, egg shaped rattles work especially well for this
FOR PRAYERS AND INTENTIONS Prayer and intention can be broadcast to the spirit world as you sit and hold your rattle to make prayer
MEDITATIONS A Rattle is perfect to use as a sound healing tool and meditational journey. The seeds within the rattle scatter the illusions of the conscious mind, planting seeds of pure and clear mind.

WHAT RATTLE SHOULD I CHOOSE ?
STICK SHAPED RATTLE Easy to hold and play, very robust, can also be used as a wand and for general healing, usually available with pod or bell jingles
BELL RATTLE a more gentle sound perfect for space clearing and gentle journey, a bell will bring metal elemental healing energy. Bell rattles can be used for ancestral work, protection, transformation of energy, calling in to prayer,
POD RATTLE usually pods create an intense and crackling sound and are perfect to clear and cleanse energy, good for intention setting and manifestation
EGG SHAPED a perfect shape for healing energy work and aura scanning. Can be used for goddess rituals and fertility.
ROUND OR BALL SHAPED RATTLE usually small and made of seed pods, this rattle sends energy equally in all directions a good all rounder (pun intended) seeds are always good for intention setting and manifestation
WOOD SYMBOLISM The wood a rattle is made from can invoke specific energy such as coconut wood for nurturing, eucalyptus wood is good for moving energy fast, oak wood brings strength and flexibility, Apple wood invokes love and protection, fig for protection and Hawthorne for purification.
GRASS RATTLE usually made out of driedleaves, very gentle sound perfect to connect to the forests and jungles, called shapaca in peru
All of the above rattles are available in my Etsy shop where I hand create rattles using ethical harvest VISIT MY ETSY SHOP HERE
USING YOUR RATTLE
Your rattle is your sacred tool which i hope you will journey with for many years to come, it will help heal, cleanse and protect you, as you start your sacred relationship with your rattle, here is my guide to connecting with your rattle through ceremony, you can do this ceremony once or many times as a rattle meditation:
OPEN SACRED SPACE connect to your still centre within in your space you use for meditation or energy work, or altar
SMUDGE YOUR RATTLE AND SPACE with any herbs you prefer such as palo santo. sweetgrass or sage, or just use pure cleansing intention or reiki, or anoint your rattle with sacred oil
BLESS YOUR RATTLE do a simple prayer or verbal intention ‘i Bless this rattle with the Creators Light and healing intentions for my higher good, Aho’
SIT AND CONNECT feel the weight, shape of your rattle, look at the decorations and observe the beauty of your rattle visually, connect to what your rattle is made from: wood, pods, shell, stones etc consciously connect to every component of your rattle, feel the rattle merge with your energy as you become one
SET INTENTIONS set any intention you like, intuitively listen out for any other messages your rattle offers to bring or teach you, each rattle has its own message, its own power and medicine. A rattle is a very personal tool, that will cooperate in accordance to your intention as well as teach you
SOUNDING YOUR RATTLE start to play your rattle softly, then more as you go on, find out what ‘energy’ it holds for you, what sounds it makes, the feelings it brings to you, what do and don’t like, some are quiet and work internally and some are loud and work externally, be with the sound to hear how your rattle wants to work and be played
NAMING If you like give your rattle a name (if one comes)
CLOSING Thank your rattle for your journey with gratitude, hold the rattle up to sky, touch your rattle down to earth and then hold your rattle to your heart, with gratitude. You can smudge again, cleansing your rattle after any journey or healing work
STORE Store your rattle wrapped in a cloth, scarf or bag or box ideally place on your altar or sacred meditation space (always store away from damp or heat)
PLAYING THE RATTLE
Here are a few ideas to use your rattle to get you started:
HOLDING THE RATTLE
Hold in your dominant hand
Hold the rattle gently however feels natural, with fingers, palm area, allowing the other fingers to curl gently around the rattle shape, avoid holding or ‘gripping’ the rattle too tightly
allow your hand, wrist and arm to be relaxed and soft during playing. Let the whole arm relax and try to hold no tension in the body (as this can cause stiffness)
Play for short periods of time to start to get you used to playing the rattle, always observing the body and releasing any stiffness in the fingers, hand, wrist, arm and shoulder areas to avoid muscle stiffness, strain or injury
always let the rattle move freely as you hold a gentle relaxed grip
Note: if using the rattle for healing work on yourself or others always energetically cleanse your rattle before using it on yourself or another

BASIC RATTLE MOVEMENTS
depending on your specific type of rattle it is suggested that you experiment and play with the following suggested sounds to see what works best:
SIDE TO SIDE for softer sounds
or
UP AND DOWN for more pronounced and intense sounds
ROUND make circular movements with your rattle and see what sounds it creates
INTENSIFYING THE SOUND if your rattle is soft in sound you can increase your rattle sound by tapping / gently slapping the rattle onto the heel of your hand making the percussive sound more intense and sharper this works especially well with gentle bell rattles
SHOOSHING
Gently move your rattle from side to side to sound a constant sound (holding the handle very loosely so the rattle can move gently and freely)
This is good to clear and sooth energy as this sound is gentle and calming for the nervous system
ENERGY MOVER
A very fast content shake with the rattle (usually played up and down) holding the handle loosely to get a fast shake, to intensify the sound you can use the heel of the hand as a resistance
THE CONSTANT BEAT
1- 1- 1- 1- 1- 1- (Sha - Sha - Sha - Sha) usually played up and down
This beat can be done slow to very fast and is very good to use for
Journeying
Space clearing
Sound healing
Singing
Usually when making a beat with a rattle, you can also use the heel of the hand for extra percussive sound
HEART BEAT
Make a soothing sound like that of a heart beat
1-2 . 1-2 . 1-2 (sounding: shush shush - shush shush) ideally played mid to slow if you want to calm down the heart rate, to raise heart rate it is played fast (caution is advised!)
This is especially good for healing as it is a very soothing and relaxing beat
INVOKING HEALING ENERGY
During a ceremony use the rattle to invoke your spirit guides, whether of your ancestral family or of great shaman spirit guides, so they can help to heal yourself or another. The rattle brings healing, protection and positive energy
PLAYING TIPS
Play along to your favourite meditative music
usual rattle as you sing simple healing songs, mantra or even just make sounds and hum as you play intuitively
HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR RATTLE
Each rattle has a different life length some delicate rattles (made out of dried leaves) last a short period of time and more robust rattles (wood, hyde, pod etc) can last much longer depending on how often you play and with what intensity .
With the correct care a rattle can last you a good amount of time and give you much pleasure and enjoyment
Keep dry and clean
Do not exposed to water or get wet as rattles are made from natural components and can be susceptible to mold and rot
Avoid direct sunlight as this can make the rattle brittle
Store in a cool, dark place
Do not play a rattle directly near the ear canal, if in doubt or noise sensitive wear ear plugs, always check with a health professional before you use a rattle, especially if you have had an operation within six months, have heart or hearing / ear condition. Using a rattle does not substitute healthcare advice.
Keep your rattle away from babies, children and pets, ensure any children using a rattle are supervised at all times, rattles contain small parts that could be a choking hazard
TO CLEAN wipe with a soft damp cloth and leave in a warm place until fully dry
